As one of the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee, an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear can be extremely painful and uncomfortable. The ACL is one of the four main ligaments within the knee joint that connects the femur to the tibia. It extends transversely in the center of the knee to prevent the tibia from sliding out in front of the femur and provides rotational stability to the hinge joint. ACL injuries are seen most often in people who participate in high-risk sports or have suffered from a serious fall.

Diagnostics

Patients typically experience a significant amount of pain, swelling, instability and a loss of range of motion  almost immediately following the injury. Patients who have experienced an ACL injury will be assessed in the clinic with an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan to evaluate the damage to the ligament. Physicians may also order an x-ray to determine any possible fractures to surrounding bone.

Reconstructive Surgery

Patients who suffer injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) may require reconstructive surgery. Reconstruction of the ACL is an arthroscopic surgery, which is performed under regional or general anesthesia. During this procedure, a graft is used to replace the ligament in the knee. The graft, or replacement tissue, is taken from the knee cap, tendon, or cadaver. After making multiple incisions in the knee area, the graft will be inserted by an orthopedic surgeon. Our team at Northeast Georgia Health System is dedicated to providing advanced orthopedic care to help you get back to your everyday life.

Post-op Recovery

ACL repair surgeries can be extremely effective, with many patients experiencing complete restoration of stability and function within the knee. The majority of ACL surgeries are outpatient procedures, which require a few hours of recovery. However, physical therapy and rehabilitation is key to a successful outcome and can take anywhere from four months to a year. As with every medical procedure, recovery time varies on a patient-to-patient basis.
