Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s orthopedic specialists offer precise diagnosis and treatment for meniscus injuries. Our staff has an extensive background in corrective surgery of the joints, using the most advanced technology to cater to each patient’s unique condition.
The meniscus is a rubbery c-shaped disk in the knee that serves as a stabilizer and provides a cushion between the thigh bone and the shin bone in the lower leg. There are two menisci in each knee, which helps keep the knee steady during twisting and bending motions. Meniscus injuries are commonly the result of a sports injury.
Depending on the severity of the meniscal tear, symptoms can range from mild pain or a feeling of instability in the knee to more severe pain, swelling, and difficulty extending the leg. Meniscal Tears assessed with an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan to evaluate the damage to the ligament. Physicians may also order an x-ray to determine any possible fractures to surrounding bone.
Injuries can be benign, requiring only ice and elevation to treat the swelling and pain or involve more severe tears that may require surgical treatment. Doctors typically use arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus. Incisions are made to the knee to allow the surgeon to place small devices and sutures to repair the tear. Injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL) can be associated with meniscal tears and can influence or change the nature of the procedure.
Physical therapy is key in an effective and fast recovery. Patients can expect to be off their feet for several weeks following surgery before starting rehabilitation through a series of exercise programs. We are committed to helping patients return to their everyday lives following their knee injury.
